That sucks.
I am about to have my wife's spare fitted for a weather
proof cover. That way, when the wheel is up and out
of the way, it will be protected (like you wanted yours
to be) from most anything. The trick is to get a cover that
is breathe-able so that moisture from the 'top' of the tire
will pass through and dry out once it sits in the 'cover'.
I'll let everyone know what I come up with/pricing/pictures
once its done.
