<<You didn't mention which year truck you have, or the specific stereo
model. (Believe it or not, the year DOES matter).>>

It's a '98 with the "basic" full-logic AM/FM Cassette deck w/soft touch
controls.

<<My '99 has the base tape deck with these controls, and the sound from my
discman sounds just as good/awful as the stock system (I'm replacing it on
friday).>>

As long as the sound spectrum is full it sounds Ok to Good, but if there is a
break in the music or there is a delicate guitar solo or something (like Clapton
Unplugged or SRV's Riviera Paradise), the "hiss" is really annoying... It's
almost like the old snap, crackle and pop of the old vinyl albums.

<<Two possible solutions: I'm guessing you're using a relatively
high-quality CD Player/tape adapter, most likely a Sony.>>

I was going to get the Sony but some people told me that Panasonic has got the
edge on Sony right now for portable CD players... So, I went with the Pan. slim
line. It's a nice unit as long as I use the headphones.

<<If you have the old stereo and a sony adapter, try a crappy adapter, like a
Realistic or Recoton. I found these to sound MUCH better than Sonys for
the old CC stereos. The downside is the wiring is really cheap, so you
need to replace either the wiring or the whole unit every 6mos-1yr.>>

In 6mos-1yr I'll probably be more willing to upgrade the entire system... I've
just got some other priorities for my $$ right now. Not to mention that
Christmas just about wipes me out every year. Every year I can't help thinking
that Scrooge had the right idea (j/k) :-)

<<Sorry for my long-windedness, but I've spent a lot of time dealing with
this problem, and found it simpler to just replace the head unit with an
Alpine CD.>>

No problem for me, I appreciate your's and everyone else's response/advice. The
DML is an awesome place in my book!!!
