I'm outta my leage here now for sure, but it might not be a bad idea to
try and figure out where the gas smell is coming from. Is it coming from
the engine, or from the exhaust, or is it leaking out onto the ground?
(from a cracked fuel line or fitting) Did it idle normally, or was it
high or low? Any surging?
If it were me, I'd probably get it to a dealer ASAP; there's definitely
something going on here, and chances are it'll pop back up again at the most
inconvenient moment possible... :-)
Here's a wild shot in the dark... What if some sort of sludge was
moving through the gas line or the pump? Maybe it blocked the gas flow
at first, (preventing the engine from running) but has now sunk to the bottom
of a line and frozen, thus narrowing the size of the opening that
the fuel goes through? Wouldn't that raise the fuel pressure at the injectors
and cause a rich condition? (would explain the fuel smell)
Like I said, its a shot in the dark, and I'm not sure if restricting the
fuel flow would raise the pressure or not... (I'm thinking of a garden hose
or a drinking fountain where if you restrict it, the pressure rises and
shoots a smaller amount of water further than normal...)
