a shift kit will make the trans shift harder. Instead of boom it will go BAM
into gear and will slip less during shifts. shift kits dont modify shift
points.

You too!?? Mine does the exact same thing to me. If I "get on it" from
a light it holds it till red line (then takes about 17 hours to shift
into 2nd). My parents Durango holds 1st much longer than my dak and it
feels real good. You can try moving the kickdown cable which is
connected to the rear passenger side of the throttle body. This will
change the shift points to some extent. I have found that messing with
this can improve 1-2 shifts but on the highway it will not want to
downshift to pass someone, or if it does it will downshift and then
immediately upshift again..... I think we just need a good shift kit.
