Backspacing is the distance from the lip of the backside
of the rim to the mounting surface of the rim.

The stock 15x7 rim has a backspacing of about 5.5"

In order to measure the backspacing with a tire mounted
on the rim, you will need to get a 15" or so ruler (or equivalent)
so that it lies on the lip of the rim across to the other
lip. This is needed because the tire bulges beyond the
rim lip.

Any backspacing less than 5.5" has the effect of
moving the rim/tire outward ... i.e. too much and the
tire will be beyond the fender lip and stress the suspension
parts.

Any backspacing more than 5.5" has the effect
of moving the rim/tire inward ... with the '97+, depending
of the cross section of the tire, the bulge will rub on
the a-arm on the front /// with the rear, you need only
be concerned with the leaf spring ... a lot more room to play with.
