' Back when radial tires were new ,rotating them wore them out right
away.
What has changed? I thought the tire people were offering free rotation
every 5000 miles to cover their butt for something or as a sale
oppertuinty. "
-Actually, they were flying apart when they were rotated back then.
Then Firestone recalled their 500's and redesigned them and copper and
brass plated the steel belts for better rubber adhesion, and *voila* no
more problems. Rotations are to spread the wear equally over all 4
tires and increase their life expectancy. Most tires come with a
mileage warranty and the only way to achieve that mileage is to rotate
the tires at certain intervals. No rotation, no warranty....
FWD cars are much harder on tires than RWD vehicles. A car like a
Nissan Altima or like that will kill a pair of tires in 15-20K unless
they are rotated.
