what i think is happening is the computer is advancing the timing based
on signals sensors are sending, but one of theses signals has to be
wrong. i'm concerned that i am going to damage a piston if not all six
with the knocking going on when this happens.

hhmm.. may be a sign of a sensor goin' bad. Have you pulled the codes?
