Re: Changing Tranny Fluid

as long as we're talking about the 4xRH or 4xRE transmissions, you must use
ATF+3, aka 7176+ fluid... use of any Dextron fluid will result in at least a
shudder when shifting. The older transmissions (727, and maybe A-5xx) could
use Dextron (II, I think) I have been told there is a 'friction modifier'
out there that can be added to Dextron fluid to make it 7176+ compatible,
but I wouldn't trust it..

you'll need about 7 quarts of ATF if you're changing the filter (that's for
a 46RE)... I used a Fram transmission filter, but I don't know that I'd use
it again... it looks pretty cheesy compared to the Mopar filter... maybe Wix
or Perolator (sp?) have a better one... the stock one is actually
encapsulated in plastic... with a pick-up hole in the bottom covered by a
screen. The Fram was just all filter media, and I can see where it might be
more suceptible to sucking air under hard G's (either cornering or bouncing
around).

OTOH, you can use Dextron III in the transfer case without any problems...
but the manual transmission is a different story... I believe (don't quote
me) that it uses 5w30 or 10w30 motor oil... synthetic is perferred...

P.S. good luck on not taking a fluid bath when you do it... I'm getting a
drain plug to add for the next time.
