Guess I shoulda mentioned the process in the original post. They put a bunch
of little cuts on a diagonal across the tread. The cuts (sipes) don't go all
the way to the edge, on the All Terain tires they stop short of the outside
tread blocks. The sipes are about 1/4 in deep and almost like razor cuts.
Can't even see them unless you distort the tread. As the tread flexes it
exposes the edges. I got mine done at a Discount Tire Center, but I thnk other
tire stores do it too. Maybe it is a rain, snow, and ice area thing???
