Expanding Exhaust Gas?

I believe gases shrink as they cool. That's why hot air balloons need
burners to keep
them aloft. IMHO exhaust pipes at the rear of the vehicle don't really
need to be any bigger than the ones coming out of the engine.

As exhaust cools it expands.
