Subject: DML: Bad gas mileage on trip AND y-pipe ???

Okay, on my trip to louisianna from kansas. i recorded that averaging
around
85 mph, i got (according to the overhead computer) 16.8 miles to the
gallon
then on the way back..
17.1 this is bad... and very sad.
i have a 97 dakota v6, 3.9, auto matic. bug deflector, 10" air cleaner
(with
poor man's ram air tubing) tonneau cover, electricic fans, and 180
degree
stat. and on the way down to louisianna, i had a dynomax Race magnum
muffler,
but on the way back i got a 2 chamber flow master. MY GOD it is loud
under
2000 RPM and kinda has an annoying "note" on the highway and when
letting off
the gas .... well, is that piss poor mileage?

ALSO..
when i was down in louisianna, my coz owns a shop that does mufflers so
i told
me to fabricate me a custom y-pipe (he has a freaking mandrel bender)
but he
told me i'm just wasting my money, since you have to do the WHOLE
system to
get real gains? can some1 prove him or me wrong?

Dester,
You've got the V-6? What RPM were you running at 85mpg? My V8 4X4 got
over 17mpg last Thursday on a 310 mile round trip from Memphis to Little
Rock. I averaged about 75mph on the rural interstate. I imagine if I
ran at 85, besides getting a ticket in AR, I would have only gotten
about 12 or 13 mpg. I've got a 3" custom cat back with 3 chamber
Flowmaster, JET Stage 2 chip, 180 degree stat, MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor
wires, and Champion Truck plugs.
