I have installed over 100 car audio systems including a few 140+ DB systems
and a few sound quality systems. With a $410 50X4 amp you are paying for the
name and the advertisement of the amps name. If it makes you feel better and
you want to impress others with your fancy amp... then go for it. But honesty
if you install most amps correctly they should give you plenty of enjoyment.
For example I have a Jenson amp (50x4 RMS... $150 on sale) and a $30 10"
sub... they sound tremendous because I spent my time on the box and the wiring
and installation. It make me even happier when my system sounds as good if not
better than the guy down the street who spent $800 to have a shop install
overpriced Hype amps. He's what you do... go to the quiet guy who owns a
regular car at an IASCA competition. You know the one... he doesn't care about
the boom.... He probably had it 10 years ago. Now he has graduated to sound
quality systems. Sit down and talk to him. He will undoubtedly have big dollar
amps in his car but more than likely its for the IASCA points from the judges.
Ask him what he suggests for a good sounding system and tell him you DON"T
want to compete but that you just want a good sounding system. He will tell
you its all in the planning and choice of selected components that match each
other well. And in your choice of subwoofer box if you choose to go that way.
Now I may ruffle a few feathers here but this is coming from somebody who had
a full boomin' car stereo system with four 15" subs before I got my first car
9 years ago. I've seen em' all from Richard Clark's computer controlled 87
Grand National that swept IASCA for 3-4 years with only two tweeters, two 12"
mid basses, and two !5" subs... to the armored truck with sixty 15" subs. In
car stereo... I don't believe in you get what you pay for... I believe in you
get what you plan for.
