Holy Cow! Three good pumps?! If I give 1/2 a pump to each, of what I'm
calling the upper and lower ball joints, it's pouring out the sides! I
always thought this was like overpressure (like in a modern tank), that
wouldn't cause any harm and would prevent any grit or water from finding
it's way into the joint? Darn (still Easter), I hope I'm not doing any
harm!

Look for anywhere there's moving parts / joints. Also, it's not a good idea
to squirt grease until you see it come out - that's a good way to ruin the
seal. It's best just to give 3 good pumps from the gun to each zerk. Do
that at every oil change or every 3k miles and you'll be ahead of probably
over 90% of the people with regards to maintenance.
