I have the rear end whine too, at about 35-40 mph. Doesn't concern me
too much. My 81 Jimmy with posi did that too. What does piss me off is
the detonation (pinging) I'm getting. I use 87 octane (as recommended)
and below 2000 rpm at medium loads (like cruising up a hill), I can
hear it. I filled up with 89 and it hasn't been doing it. I'm afraid
if I take it in to get "fixed", which I'm guessing is retarding the
timimg a couple of degrees, I'll lose power. But with 89 at 56.9 cents
per liter (2.15 per gallon) its expensive! I don't know what to do.
Out of curiosity, if they can make diesel pistons survive detonation,
which is how they operate, for hundred of thousands of miles, why
can't they make gas pistons do the same?
