Eric,
It's an old racer's trick(so I hear). You're supposed to paint a strip
along the exhaust pipe. Then take it for spin around the block (or a
little further). The place where the paint burns off first is that maximum
length of exhaust pipe you need. This is supposed to be where the pipe is
long enough to make maximum torque without a loss of upper rpm power. It's
a cheap/easy way to figure out header collector length on race cars. I
think the other way involes lots of math, or trial and error...
