There is some controversy about whether to break the truck in on dino or
synth oil. I think Corvette and some other high-dollar sports cars come
from the factory with synth - but it can't hurt to break it in with regular
old dino oil. I'd probably replace it at 500-1000 miles, then again at 3000
miles, at which point I'd switch to synthetic.
A lot of people run Mobil 1 synth & that seems to be a pretty good oil.
Personally, I run AMSOIL 0W30 and change the oil every 25k or once a year,
whichever comes first. I change the filter at 12,500 or every 6 months,
whichever comes first. I've run synth now for about 70000 miles. Can't
tell if my mileage has improved, but the truck doesn't burn as much oil.
Used to burn a quart every 1k, now it burns a quart every 5k miles (dealer
says AMSOIL "cleans" the motor out and lowers oil consumption). I was very
skeptical, but it worked for me. My brother runs the same stuff in his
Beretta - he's run it since 25k, he changes every 25k, now has 125k on, car
uses no oil & still gets 45mpg.
P.S. - If your truck burns quite a bit of oil while running synth, you'll be
better off economically running plain ol' dino oil.
