Not sure about you, but I can take my oil filter off
by hand. Never use a wrench. I make sure that I oil the new gasket
before I install the new filter, and turn it tight as possible (by
hand). When it comes time to remove it for a new one, I clean it off
with a rag, and give it a good twist. Worked for over 100k on my '95,
and twice so far on my '99. Switched from a Fram PH16 (stock) to a K&N
oil filter (figured I would try it-- not sure of the pn).

No problem here. I first drain the oil from pan, then open the oil
filler on the valve cover. Once the oil has completely drained, I
replace the drain plug. Then I loosen the oil filter, about 1/2-3/4
turn (having the oil catch ready)... once the oil starts to drip out,
and around the filter I catch it with the used oil container... after
about 3 minutes, I can spin it a few more turns, catch a little, keep
going, and finally remove the oil filled filter... Dumping its contents
into the used oil container. I keep about 5-6 rags on hand to pickup
any spills, and kitty litter on stand-by to clean up the rest.

I took a used Mobil 1 bottle, and cut off the bottom. World's best
synthetic oil funnel.

Never tried it, I am a dog owner too.. go figure and I recommend kitty
litter.

Funny, I think my Dak has a intake manifold leak too...
Seems to happen a lot I fear.
