Been there done that. Waited 4 hours, and 18 hours... didn't matter. I can't
handle hot oil (and engine since you're right next to the exhaust system) so I
always wait until the engine is cold to the touch.
I think I'm just going to buy a filter re-location kit and be done with the
problem...

A post here a while back suggested that you change your oil after the truck
has been sitting for several hours. This apparently lets all the oil drain
back into the filter and the engine. I had the same problems with a messy
filter removal but now I hardly spill a drop.
