Tried that kind (had 2 that I threw out) but they just slipped on the filter
even though they were the right size. By the time they got enough loading on
them to apply torque, there was no room to move them. I ended up buying an
"articulated" ring wrench. It's like a band wrench but it's a hard ring with
joints. It has teeth on the inside of the ring and it doesn't adjust much
(you have to buy the right size as each wrench only fits a couple of filter
sizes). I got the one for my filters and zip! It worked like a charm. No
wrestling, no excess slack to take up, just slip on, twist and go...

Use band type filter wrench. Go in from under the hood (not up from under
the chassis). once the wrench is on apply firm, steady pressure. At first
you'll get about a 1/16 of a turn movement. Loosen and reset the wrench and
proceed as before. Soon it will be turning 1/4 turn. Reset wrench again to
the right position for optimum leverage and continue with the steady
pressure. Trust me, it will suddenly break loose for you. The filter
always tightens way up on me too, but I have yet to fail getting it off with
the band type remover. It's as good as a done deal. Your problems are over
in this department.
