I know this seems like a stupid question but how do I know for sure I'm
hooked to the frame and not the axle.. is there an easily identifiable hook
up point under the bed or under the front end?

The best (and preferably the only place) you can mount them is to the
frame. (Front or back). You can, however, use your receiver hitch as a
tow-point...but I wouldn't recommend it.
