If you look at your tires, you'll notice small grooves cut in the "chunks"
of rubber. These grooves allow for better traction on wet pavement (but
don't work on mud, ice, or snow). The rubber expands with the contact patch
creating small areas for the water to move through the tread rather than
getting under the tread. Therefore creating better traction. It actually
does work as well...However....

For the offroad tires being used on the street (such as swampers, mudders,
etc)...it's a good thing. For all of you 1/4 mile'rs and handling nuts
(nuts is used in a good way here), it's not a good thing. Tread wear
suffers as well as chunks of rubber being removed from the $120+ street
tires.
