I have never used Rain-X but I have heard that you must have your windows perfectly clean before applying it. Supposedly it puts a coating over the window and whatever is on the window gets coated as well. It sounds like you buffed your windows to the glass and took off all the wax, Rain-X, and road grim. I wonder if rubbing alcohol or some other wax/oil remover might work. Just a thought. I glad to hear it worked out for you.
