Inline engines definitely have a better reputation. Their design inherently
provides lotsa torque on the low-end, good lugging power, and they seem to
be very reliable. Chrysler's 225ci slant six is probably the most reliable
engine ever made, Ford had a decent 300ci straight-six, Cummins and most of
the 'real' diesels are inline 3-, 4-, 5-, or 6-cylinders. Many farm
tractors have inline engines because of their lugging ability. BMW uses
inline 5-cylinder engines, etc. etc...........

and yes, the Jeep 4.0L straight six is a GOOD engine.......
