Yeah, the 4.0 is an inline six. I agree that I would take an inline over
a V-6. They run smoother, especially at idle, and historically, inline
sixes have been some of the most reliable and long lasting engines built.
The Jeep 4.0 liter is based on the old AMC 4.0, and it is still one of the
best 6-cylinders out there for longevity. you just can't kill the thing.
The old Mopar 225 Slant Six that they put in base Rams until about 10
years ago (not sure exactly when they discontinued it) was also difficult
to kill. Back in the musclecar days that was the bare-bones egine option
if you couldn't afford a V8, but it had more power than a lot of the
engines out now. I'd like to observe a moment of silence for the "Leaning
Tower of Power" Many Mopar people have fond memories of it. Even at
300,000 miles. (Yes, they were known to go that far. Of course, so were
the 70's-vintage 318's.)
