How about approaching it from a safety issue? Poke around on the web and
gather safety reports on the two vehicles. Crash tests, fatalities per
1000, etc. I would think the Dakota would fair better as it is larger and
heavier.

And what about Cost of Ownership (maintenance costs over a 5 year period).
I easily found those on the web when doing my research earlier this year. I
think it was at cars.com.

At the sites below, you can also do a side by side comparison of the Dakota
and the Tacoma. You'll see that the Dakota comes out ahead.

Check out these links:

There are other issues involved in your situation beyond "which truck is
better". Unless you can take on 100% of the financial obligations of this
purchase - pay the downpayment by yourself and sign the loan without your
father as a co-signer, you do not have 100% say in the purchase. That's the
reality of your situation.

If you cannot convince your father the Dakota is the truck you want and the
truck you want to spend *your* money on over the next 5 years, then you
have to decide if you can wait until you can swing it by yourself.
Otherwise, it looks like you will be making monthly payments on a Tacoma.

Tamer.
