I also have a '96, with the steel (chromed) wheels that you just described,
Jeff. They're 6" rims, and I was told the largest tire you can safely put on
that rim is a 235, which is what I've got now. I'm using 235/70 Firestone
Firehawk SS-10s, which I've been very happy with. I wish I could have wider
tires of course, but I'll probably never be happy with the width of my tires.
:-) I get no rubbing with them, even with the steering wheel at full lock.
Jeff, does your truck have the wheel flares? (I was thinking of going to
275s, but I don't really want 'em sticking out too much either; I was hoping
the wheel flares would give me a bit more breathing room.) Eventually I'd
like to put some monster meats out back (like 350-400s or so), but I'll need
to do some cutting and relocate the springs in order to pull that off.
On a related topic, does anyone know what the narrowest tire you can put
on an 8" rim is?
