The general conclusion I've seen is that with the tailgate up, the air in
the bed stays put, and the air from over the top of the cab goes over the
top and directly over the tailgate. Just like if you have a tonneau. When
you lower the tailgate or put in a flow-through net, the air "bubble" in the
bed breaks, spills out, and actually creates more drag.
There's been quite a bit of information about this posted over time. It
should all be in the archives, just a matter of finding it.

That's what the Rhino liner is for. Cause I got it dirty and didn't want to
wash it, so I had that sprayed in :-).
