Both are correct.
The crank is the driving pulley, it is smaller, it will pull less power.
The alt (and water pump if you get a 3 pc set) are the driven pulleys,
therefore, are larger, which will also pull less power.
Just picture a 10 speed bike.. and the two gears up front.. (driving gears),
and the five in back (driven)
