To have a tranny grind like you say, would be in my opinion either a
synchro, maladjusted clutch, and considering these vehicles use a hydrolic
clutch, I would check to see if there is enough fluid in the resevior, bent
clutch fork, many numerous items to check over, but each one ties into the
other, and you have to do a process of eliminating to find the source of the
problem which could also be a bad transmission or the fluid it uses.
I don't have a 4-banger but to have ANY engine to drown out like you say
can be caused by many things
 1)- badly sealed distrubutor cap
2)-plug wires(factory wires are CRAP-they don't carry the current well,
don't seal out moisture good, and are CHEAP quality
3)-Ignition coil---not many people think of these giving problems, but when
they get wet while running they can ARC the current to a ground and die
out --look for water around the connections and water in the coil tower that
leads to the distributor
4)- again don't have a 4-banger, look at the way the air cleaner snorkle is
routed. If it is in a place or position that water can splash up into the
opening-then you found the problem as to why it died out--too much water and
not enough air--RICH fuel condition and not enough motor to compensate to
get rid of fuel

1)--change out the distributor cap to a better aftermarket quality (NAPA,
AUTO ZONE, etc)
2)--change out the ignition wires--excellent wires are
(MAGNACORE,TAYLOR--the auto stores also sell a life-time type plug wire that
a good, but the 2 I mentioned a performance shop sells them.
3)-check out the coil wire tower boot--if it is loose, there's your problem,
A boot must fit snug or tight to keep out the elements, just take a plastic
zip tie with the seregated edging and wrap the boot until snug-this should
take care of the problem
4)-air snorkel needs to be placed in a different place to keep out the
unforseen elements or a aftermarket intake system needs to be looked at.
