Well I went today and picked up a nice piece of 1/4" thick flat steel stock.
The dimensions I am going with are 12"Wx22"L. The steel supply corp. only
carries
1/4"- 12"W flat stock in 20 foot pieces, but of course cuts them to the size
you need. Well I lucked out and did not have to pay the additional $5 cutting
charge, as there was a scrap piece sitting next to the cutting machine. Total
cost for this massive 18 pound(yes I did weight it!!!) was $8. Not bad at
all.
There is already two frame braces/crossmembers on either side of the transfer
case with perfectly lined-up predrilled holes in which I will use to attach
my homemade skid plate using Grade 8 bolts and hardware. The total cost for
4-Grade 8 bolts, 4 nuts, 4 lockwashers, and 4 washers came out to $3.35.
My next step of my homebrew transfer case skid plate is to get it
rustproofed. I need some suggestions and help here. Should I just buy a can
or two of spraypaint and paint the steel stock myself? I really like how
Rustoleum's Hammered Metal Finish spray paint turns out. If I do this, should
I sand the steel down to get the surface alittle rough so the paint will
adhere to the steel? Or, should I call around and see if anyone powdercoats
steel plate? What would be the best way to help to rustproof this plate? I am
trying to do this for as cheap as possible, but want to do it right. I know
if it drags on anything the paint/rustproofing will come off, I just want to
help it look better underneath there, and not have this big orange rusted
skid plate. Thanks for any and all input on this topic!!!!!
