It's a Self-Diagnostic test that is normally done when an OBD-II system
fails emissions testing, but not limited to just that.

When does the factory recommend you do this? Every time the battery is
unhooked? It seems that the computer should have some sort of battery
back-up kinda like the CMOS battery in your PC. If the original submitters
truck was running OK when he took it to get the smog inspection, how is a
person supposed to know whether they need to perform this little ritual?
