That's exactly what I had recommended anyway. Get the basics done
first...then go with the exotic. (Works like a charm though.)

17 Degrees out of whack?? What do you mean...17 degrees initial or total?

I'm not trying to be negative, or maybe my times are just way outta wack
because my 17 degrees of advanced timing, but i have a e-ram on my 97 v6
auto
dakota with a few mods.. and after installing the e-ram, I felt no
difference in power at all. I ran it with and without the e-ram on the same
K&N filter and times varied .008 in the quarter mile.
