Yes, that's the conventional thinking. Lighter weight oil is run during
cooler weather and heavier oil during warmer weather. The first number
(say, 10, in 10w30) is the base weight of the oil, whereas the second number
(30) is the viscosity range based on additives. Eventually, those additives
break down or are lost, and you end up with straight 10-weight oil.

That being said, I run 0w30 year-round in my Dak, from south-Texas summer
heat to December sub-zero temps in South Dakota, it has not given me ANY
problems. You'd think my oil consumption would go up with 0-weight oil in
Texas summer heat, but it has actually gone down..... go figure.
