Thanks for all the info everyone! I will give it a try tomorrow. As far as
going to the Desert, I would LOVE to go..... but, and there is always a but
;o) I work on Saturdays, and have NO vacation time to use. :-( Oh well,

Ryan, it has been my experience with our 242 transfer case'd
Dakota 4x4 Sport (full time 4wd, part time 4 hi/lo & 2 HI), that
you need to shift your transmission from D(or 2 or 1) to neutral
before you shift your transfer case in/out of 4 HI/LO or 2 HI.

You can be moving (up to 5 mph) to change between 4 HI/LO, but
you must have the transmission in neutral while doing it. You
might experience some 'grinding' between 4 HI / LO if you pause
in Neutral on the transfer case while completing the shift.
I've found that even stopping vehicle completely doesn't solve the
grinding issue. If it won't go, don't force it. In that case
you'll have to turn off the engine, shift, then restart. I've
found that after 2-3 times of shifting between hi/lo, and back
again, that I rarely have that happen. I practiced enough in
a dirt parking lot that I can do it now without needing to even
look at the pattern on the knob.

You can also switch between 2 HI and 4 HI at any speed up
to 55 mph (as stated in your owner's manual) I have the full
time 4wd capability, and will sometime switch from 2 HI to
4 Full time when it's been raining, and do this while underway
(shift to neutral on the trans, shift 2 HI to 4 full time,
then shift trans to drive).

You should go with us to the desert on Dec. 4th (Palm Springs
or Ocotillo) for the Socaldoc Xmas party/run.

Hey all,

I have the part time transfer case in my 99 Durango. In all of the
offroading I have done, I have not needed to use 4WD Low yet. A couple
weeks ago, I was up Azusa canyon, and needed to help pull of Jeep Wrangler
out of some mud ;o). So, I decided to put it in 4WD low to make sure I did
not get stuck also. So, I was in 4WD high, and started driving forward at
about 2 or 3 mph. Then I pushed the shifter to the right, and straight down
through neutral, and into 4WD low. It grinded a little bit, but apparently
went in. So, I put it into reverse to back up to hook up the Jeep, and it
popped out of 4WD low into Neutral. I tried the preceding steps at least 10
times, with the same results.

My question, is this a problem with my not knowing anything about 4WD? This
is my first 4x4, and I am learning alot. So, could this be a problem with
the transfer case? Oh, I also tried to shift it with the engine off, and it
would not even go into gear. HELP!!! I am going to Yosemite in a month, and
there will be snow, and I need to know how to make this work just in case.
Thanks!
