actually when indexing plugs you want the open oart of the electrode tip to be aimed towards the intake valve ( where the gas air mix comes in. the washers are supposed to save the head and give the apppropriate depth so the piston doesnt smack the plug. Otgherwise its just like any thing you should use a washer
