Siping is a series of small, lateral cuts in the tire tread. The multiple
cuts allow the tread to 'bend' and 'give' more, and also "absorb" water to a
small degree. They cause the tire to act like a softer-compound tire, as
far as snow and other wet conditions are concerned. Siping may cause your
tires to wear a lot quicker, depending on how rough of roads you drive
(gravel roads will eat the tires up a lot quicker than smooth highway). HTH
