Backspacing is the distance from the mounting flange to the rear (inside)
edge of the rim. A good way to measure it is to lay a wheel face down on the
ground, lay a straightedge across the back edge of the RIM, not the TIRE, and
then measure the distance from the back side of the mounting flange to the
inside edge of the rim, as determined by laying a straightedge across it.

Less backspacing means that the wheels will "stick out" farther away from the
truck.
