My 2000 just has a regular key, I know because I had the dealer cut me a new
one for a spare...he just grabbed a blank and lined the cutter up with mine
and popped a new one out. No programming etc.
By the way....when he did this I said "here's my code(from the baggie the
keys come in), cut me a new key" he said that the code shipped with a lot of
2000's were wrong, he put mine on the machine and gave me the correct code
along with a new key.
Have the dealer parts dept. check your code before you need it!!

No, if you have a newer model Dak, it's true. I'm astonished that
noone on the DML seems to know this. They told me about it when I
picked up my Dak- I don't think it's even optional, it just is
there. The key sends an electric signal to the ignition- if it
doesn't get that signal, it will start, then cut out in a couple
seconds. I'm pretty sure there are instructions in the owners manual
about the key. They tell you how to program a new key for the
ignition, but you need 2 keys already set for the ignition to do it.
If you lose a key, you have to order a replacement from the factory
using the # that is on the little plastic bag the keys came in.

I've heard of these types of "secure" ignitions before and I think
Dodge has
got 'em but it's an optional thing (not even sure if it's offered on
the Dakota
line)... The keys look totally different (much larger and a
different cut) so
unless you got some kind of special option (which you would obviously
know
about) I think the guy is full of it.
If there is a circuit city around I'd give them a call (and see how
much they
would charge to install it) and see what they say... I dunno why,
but the
circuity city near me has an install crew that really *seems* to know
their
stuff (they installed my alarm).

Hello all,
I received a remote start unit for christmas and finally got around
to
having it installed. When I talked to the tech to make my appointment
to
have it installed he gave me two bits of information that confused me
(A)
Dodge has a special key that emits a frequency that allows you to
start the
truck and to bypass this it was going to cost $100 extra (B) to
perform the
feat he was going to destroy one of my ignition keys I have never
heard any
mention of this before.
Any info would be appreciated.
