Sam,

Your description of the part time four wheel drive system on the Dakota is
exactly what my Jeep Cherokee has, only Jeep calls it SelectTrac. Do you
know if the transfer case is the same on both?? If it is, I'll be buying a
new Dak, because the part time fully locked transfer case provides superior
traction in snow and ice. I've driven in blizzards for years with my
SelectTrac without any problem, while other 4WD vehicles are slipping and
sliding.

Full time gives you the option of running 4wd on the highway,
and basically gives you a limited slip transfer-case. No binding
on hardpack, or on the street. Great for rainy weather/snow and
driving on the street, as well as trails where it goes from loose
stuff to hard dirt or pavement.

Part time is a fully locked transfer case-- front and rear turn at
nearly exact same speed. Binding can occur on hardpack/pavement, so
not recommended unless driving straight across something. Perfect for
sand/mud, etc. ec.

It should happen once you hit the correct position in the transfer case
for your selection (4PT, 4LO)

Shift on the fly means to shift while underway. I can switch from 2HI,
to 4 PT or 4 FT (we have Full Time option on our '99) at any speed below
55 mph. 4 LO should be enaged while running less than 5 mph or stopped
as it is a real gear reduction, and it is a little hard on the transfer
case otherwise.
