I had a problem similar to that on my 94 Cherokee. It ended up being
something to do with my Tach. Jeep fixed it for me under warrenty, so I'm not
real sure what the problem was, but it is a good place to start looking. Mine
seemed to act up when there was a great change in Humidity. (Which happens a
lot in Missouri!) Good luck.
