I certainly wouldn't encourage people to start removing their cats.
However, you're WAAAAAAYYYYY offbase saying a stock cat will only cut 10hp
off a 400hp engine.
You want real world data.
1985 1/2 Mustang 5.0L LX Auto
Ran 14.71@91.7 avg
Replaced stock cat with a bolt in test pipe. No other change. Nominal
changes in atmospheric conditions (I had a weather station and handheld
weather computer with me).
Ran 14.47@93.1 avg
No other changes and improved .24 sec and 1.4 mph.
That's every bit of a 20hp improvement in a vehicle that put out about
180hp at the rear wheels.
The car was stock with the exception of 1990 LX Sport Aluminum wheels and
fresh 225-60VR-15 gatorbacks, Walker Dynomax mufflers, and a K&N filter.
Two runs were made experimented with launch rpm.
Then a two runs were made with the cat and two runs without. The two run
averages are given.
The Economic effects of EPA regulation of the Automotive Industry was my
thesis area. I haven't done much research lately, but I can tell you that
there is plenty of complete h*rsesh*t statements made by experts in support
of the EPA. When you call them on it, they hide behind "the damage to our
environment from the burning of fossil fuel is....." Fine! Wonderful!
True! But, don't lie to us tell the public that emissions equipment is
more efficient and less burdensome than reality.
Most of the cats and most of the emissions equiptment has seen enormous
improvement. It is now possible to build performance vehicles again and
make them relatively clean burning. BUT! We are no where near being down
to a 10hp loss on a 400hp engine.
