The upstream O2 sensor(nearest to engine) is the one that's used for fuel/air
calculations. This is upstream of the cat and it's output wouldn't be
affected. The other sensors are attached downstream and/or on the cat itself.
These O2 sensors are the ones that are used to test catalytic converter
efficiency. Under short trip and stop-and-go conditions the PCM will never
test for cat efficiency. Very strict parameters must be met before a test is
performed. And even then you must fail 3 consecutive times before you get a
light. I can't remember the specifics, but I remember when it was first
posted, I realized that on a 27 mi. long island I'd NEVER get the "light".
Did anybody save that post? I did but somehow lost it.
