Thermostat help

Does anyone know how to check by visual inspection whether the thermostat I
have in my hand is one of the "big" thermostats (pre 78?) or one of the
"small" thermostats (post 78?)(like diameter or something)? I want to check
it without pulling off the thermostat housing and comparing it to the one on
my truck.
