DAIMLERCHRYSLER DEVELOPS CERAMIC FOR AUTO-BRAKE USE
A carbon/silicone production process developed by DaimlerChrysler is
expected to allow large-scale, cost-efficient production of ceramic
brakes
for automobile use. According to the company, ceramic brakes are superior

to brakes made of traditional materials because they can perform reliably

after more than 180,000 miles of use and do not require changing. They
are
not subject to wear or warping and are maintenance-free. To date,
large-scale production of ceramic brakes has been deemed prohibitively
expensive, but the DaimlerChrysler production method is expected to
change
that. It involves compressing and heating carbon fibers, carbon powder
and
resin. After cooling, the brake disc blank is ground to size, reheated
with
silicone and cooled again, after which it is ready for use.
