Geoff,
Yes you can. The LA style thermostat housing plate is something like 2-3/8"
in diameter. (I don't have one here in my office so I can't be exact.) The
factory magnum style thermostat housing is approximately 1" smaller.

Does anyone know how to check by visual inspection whether the thermostat I
have in my hand is one of the "big" thermostats (pre 78?) or one of the
"small" thermostats (post 78?)(like diameter or something)? I want to check
it without pulling off the thermostat housing and comparing it to the one on
my truck.

Thanks,
.Geoff
