I have a 96 Dak-a-do with the 42RE. It started that weird bucking contest
before I rebuilt it this last time. And yes, I said this "last" time. This
is my fifth time to rebuild it. This however was the first time it hunted
for either first or second gear. I decided to try a different shift kit, one
that was more aggressive than the Trans-go that I had in the valve body at
the time. When I tore the valve body apart, I looked at the one-two shift
valve and found a hair line scratch on it. I used a bore-lite for my handguns
to look down the bore that the valve sat in, and it too had the hair line
scratch on it. I slid the valve back in and sure enough, it had a catch in
it. I got my hands on a good valve body, installed my new shift kit, and
have had good luck with it every since. And that was about 11,000 miles ago.
It still has no problems chirping one-two and two-three. Another secret I
have learned from some friends who race pro-stock Mopars, when adjusting the
bands, tighten them 1/8 turn more than the manual calls for. This will add
more pressure to the clutches and cause firmer shifts. Also, adjust the
shift cable to factory specs, and then move the cable back towards the
firewall two clicks of the cable lock. By using this shift kit and cable
setup, I have shaved .018 off my 1/4 mile times. If you have any problems,
e-mail me and I will give a more in depth description.
