Try holding it under the flame of a propane torch for a few minutes. This
should help burn off carbon and other deposits that might have accumulated
there. Be sure not to touch the end with your finger/hand because the oil
will ruin it.

You can use the same procedure to test whether or not it is working as well
as the response time.
