I'm Will Coughlin and I've got a 2000 reg. cab 2wd,
4.7L/5-spd/3.92sg(9.25in) truck and I have a few answers (or suggestions) to
your questions. The noise you hear when releasing and engaging the clutch
while in nuetral is partly the transmission,as you suspect, but most of it
is the classic, noisy dodge throwout bearing.Mine is one of the quietest
I've heard in a dakota or a ram and it can still be heard over idle
conversation in nuetral. The gear whine you describe is normal, because this
is,after all, a truck transmission.First gear is rather low, and the
internals of the transmission get spinning rather fast when you wind first
gear out. Most of the gear noise you describe occurs in first gear, right? The
notchiness you describe would concern me, maybe more or less if I could
drive the truck myself and compare it to all of the others I have driven
with the NV-3500 transmission in them.I observe a rather loud clunk when
shifting out of first on my way to second.I haven't been able to determine
where this originates, but it does concern me.Sorry for the long post, but I
wanted to address all of your concerns as best I knew how.Congratulations on
your wife's new truck, and wlcome to the DML.For more 4.7L or 4.7L/5-spd
info, you may want to communicate with Myself, Will('00 reg.cab,2wd,
4.7L/5-spd/3.92sg), chris lambert('00 4.7L/5-spd/3.55 club cab),or matt
barret('00 reg. cab 2wd, 4.7L/5-spd/3.92sg) anyway gotta go, welcome!! Will

Subject: DML: Intro. and 5-speed transmission question
>My wife and I (believe it or not, it's my wife's truck) just bought a 2000
>Quad Cab 4.7L, 5-speed, LS diff., tire and handling package, etc. We've
had
>it about a week and a half now. To me the 1-2, 2-1, and sometimes the 2-3
>shifts are VERY notchy. 3-4 and 4-5 (and 5-4, 4-3) are smooth as silk.
>Yesterday, while taking my wife's mom out for her birthday, my wife was
>driving and the truck jumped out of first gear to neutral - apparently
>because first gear was only partially engaged. This is my wife's first
>5-speed, so I don't believe she realized first gear wasn't completely
>engaged. For those of you with a similar powertrain combination - is this
>notchiness (sp??) normal? I am debating whether to bug the dealer about
it.
>I realize it's a "heavy duty" truck transmission, but I am puzzled as to
why
>certain shifts are very smooth and others are notchy.
>
>Also, is this transmission particularly loud? I've noticed significant,
but
>not objectionable, gear whine - again, ok, I realize it's a truck. I've
>also noticed that if you let the clutch in and out while in neutral, you
can
>actually hear the gear train spin up and down - never actually heard that
>before in a car I've owned.
>
>Any insight on these items would be *greatly* appreciated.
>
>Also, also - does anyone out there autocross their truck? We plan to run
it
>occasionally for kicks. We're both very impressed by how well it sticks in
>the corners.
