    The tire could've blown. When a front tire blows, the steering wheel
jerks in that direction and your vehicle points to the side of the blown
tire.
Reflex would have you pulling in the opposite direction. Maybe the person
"countered" too much. That would explain the 90 degree "launch".
    If a front tire does blow, turn the wheel just enough to keep a straight
line and take your foot off the accelerator. Don't apply the brakes. Once
you have regained control, you can then pull to the side of the road.
