Definitely not fail-safe. My old Corolla had a lever-operated gas
door. On more than one occasion, it froze shut. If it were possible to
hold the lever in the "open" position while prying the door open, it
might have been possible to open it. The last time it happened, I
punched, kicked and pried at that thing until it cracked right down the
middle (it was plastic obviously) - then I just gave up, turned the car
around to get that side in the sun, and hoped for the best.
I don't think it's a reasonable option for people who get winter unless
they can park in a protected location (garage, near a wall). Since my
truck doesn't fit in my garage, it's not an option for me.
